What Is HEIC File?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones and some other devices. It keeps file sizes smaller than JPEG at similar quality. Here’s what HEIC is and how to open or convert it.

Definition

HEIC files use the same compression technology as HEVC (H.265) video. They store one or more images in a single file, often at about half the size of JPEG at comparable quality. Apple adopted HEIC as the default for iPhone photos to save storage and iCloud space.

When to convert HEIC

  • You’re on Windows and don’t want to install a HEIC codec
  • A website or app only accepts JPG or PNG
  • You need to edit in Photoshop, Figma, or similar (they often don’t open HEIC)
  • You’re sharing with someone who can’t open HEIC

Free, in-browser. No upload. Files never leave your device.
