Why iPhone Uses HEIC

iPhones save photos as HEIC by default to use less storage and iCloud space while keeping high image quality. Here’s why Apple uses HEIC and when to convert to JPG or PNG.

Why HEIC on iPhone

  • Smaller files – HEIC typically cuts file size by about 50% vs JPEG at similar quality, so you fit more photos on the device and in iCloud.
  • Same or better quality – The HEVC-based codec keeps detail and dynamic range while using fewer bytes.
  • Live Photos and depth – HEIC can store multiple images (e.g. Live Photo) or depth data in one file.

When to convert HEIC to JPG or PNG

Convert when you need to open photos on Windows without a codec, upload to a site that only accepts JPG/PNG, or share with someone who can’t open HEIC. Our tool runs in the browser — no app, no upload.

Free, in-browser. Files never leave your device.
